How to Check if you Got a Slot for PLDT Fibr

Edit: Now with Extra Tips for 2020

Hello folks, it’s been years since I’ve went back to checking this site and boy oh boy have there been changes. Covid-19 happened and we need Internet Connection more than ever, especially for us Filipinos.

With online classes going on and work from home in full swing, I can see why I’ve been getting so much comments lately for tips on how they should get connection.

Short tip: Don’t just stick with PLDT. Look for Converge too or Globe. More on this later.

That said, I’ve edited this to suit almost everyone’s needs – especially the concerns in the comments. You can skip ahead if you’re looking for other options aside from PLDT Fibr and to see more tips.

I’ll make a separate post soon for a focused approach, dear reader.

Survey Like a Technician – Updated for 2020

Tired of asking PLDT if you got a slot for a FIBR connection only to get a frustrating response that you can’t apply for a connection since it’s full?

Also tired of being asked if you want to upgrade your plan application so you could get a connection? Yep, we are too. Bummer right?

Well to save you the hassle, I can show you the way on how it works and how to check it without having to open the box.

But of course you’d be asking this first: What the heck should I look for?

Okay, lemme show you what you need to look at:

Network Access Points (NAP)

NAP on an electric post

(Edit: his may also apply to Converge FIBER X if you know what their box looks like)

Yes, this black box right here is a Network Access Point. It houses all the fiber optic cables connected to it and that’s the conduit that makes the connection from there to your house then to the router. The old ones are usually made out of black plastic-y parts while the new ones are in shiny metallic gray – much cleaner looking too if I may add.

View of an open network access point from blow

Now if you look here, you’ll see a field technician doing his work. He just opened up the box, this one’s silver and it’s a new one. Yep, there are newer NAP models out there so just check the coding that you saw above (LP 15 NP 7)

How many slots does it hold though?

Now we’ll take a closer look.

Close up view of a NAP

See those gray connectors on the right side? Yes, with those blue tips? Those are SC connectors or Standard Connectors/Subscriber Connectors which are connected to the ports as you can see.

You’ll count from the bottom and you’ll see eight of them connected. That’s the maximum capacity for a single NAP unless it’s a double NAP that houses 16 connections. Yes, that exists in some places, though rare.

So, why don’t they install double NAPs instead? The standard is only the 8 connection capacity since it’s not guaranteed that every subscriber would line up for a connection, building one and if it gets unused is just a waste of resources it seems.

Time to Think Outside the Box

Now for the main event, showing you the innards of the NAP might be nifty but you can’t just get a ladder and try to pry it open.

The law would be on your behind, or your chismosa neighbor would be having none of it if you try to do just that. So, we’ll try an easy method that would require your 20/20 eyeballs and sun glare resistance.

NAP loop guide

See those loops down there? Yeah, those dangling wires. That’s the secret to knowing if you still got a slot.

If you count them above you’ll get either 5 or 6, depends on how well your eyesight is. I count 5 dangling wires.

A close approximation is enough. If you count 5 or 6 then that’s good to go. Immediately apply for one. And if you count 6-7, Your chances may be slim, but there is hope, go ask your neighbors if they still use that line so you could get a connection, you could trace it from there to their homes.

That would save you time taking a trip to PLDT’s business offices or calling to know if you got a slot. THIS IS IMPORTANT –  If you’re applying for a connection, list down the LP and NP and how many slots there is so you could get a technician to install your fiber connection ASAP.

Out of Slots – Help

That’s a pretty common topic raised in the comments. For this scenario, you can do the following:

  • Trace a Fiber cable to a neighbor’s home and try to ask a neighbor if they’re still subscribed. If not, you can immediately tell your contact about it.
  • Keep on the lookout for PLDT/ProTek vans. If they circle around multiple times in a week, they might be rolling out the new NAP box.
  • If there are no NAP box available nearby and the nearest one has no slots, ask your neighbor if they’re looking to subscribe for a connection. Get their names on a list and addresses – You might convince the business department to consider putting up a new NAP if more people in your neighborhood are interested.
  • Simply find another ISP. Converge had a pretty decent start with their new sparkly shiny Fiber X. Heard good stuff about it too and I’ll be doing a review soon.

Globe is pretty decent now, or so they say.  We’re talking about their Globe Home Fiber service. I have to talk to people about it and see if it’s really that good. Most of us didn’t have a great track record with Globe really.

  • Consider trying DSL like Air Internet. Not the best option but there are ways to make sure you’ll get the most and best out of it. I myself is subscribed to Converge’s Air Internet plan Php 1250  for 10 mbps.

There are a number of factors we have to discuss about DSL and how to make it viable, but that’s for another topic.
    TL;DR –  DSL’s not all that bad.

    See: ADSL2+ vs NBN

This is a handy guide to see how Fiber Optic internet and DSL works. Way back when I took a gander at Australia’s internet situation.

Note: I’ll make a review for Converge and Globe’s services. Let’s see which we can recommend in these trying times.

I Finally Got Connected – but not with PLDT (Other Options & More Relevant Tips)

Though handy as this may seem, I myself couldn’t  get a connection years ago since the slots are full around our place. I opted for Converge’s Air Internet service (DSL) but it ended up being better.

Good for Liza Soberano that PLDT did prioritize her right? She immediately got connection.  Where’s the justice in that amirite?

Trying to apply for NAPs that are further away would cost me extra if I want a connection. I simply don’t have the cash for it.

You can read on ahead if you’re interested why it may cost extra.

Span: One Major Deciding Factor for Your Application

How? It’s the distance from the NAP Box to your home.  Technicians measure the distance from the box to your home by Spans.

It’s the line of wire between the telephone/electrical posts.

Let’s use this stock image for example:

telegraph-4812419_960_720

The wire in between the post would equal to 1 span. Say from the NAP box to your home you have like 5 – 7 spans away (also depends on the length between spans) – Your Php 1,299 application would need to be upgraded for them to consider your application.

If it’s going to be a Kilometer away from your house, you could forget about it. It’s a business driven policy and for them to even consider longer spans, you’d best have a business and opt for a pricier business plan connection.

Let’s just say the priority level scales this way:

10 Mbps – Php 1,299 – 1-3 spans

25 Mbps – Php 1,699 – May be offered if it’s 4-5 spans away

50 Mbps – Php 2,399 – Sure to be prioritized even if it exceeds 5 spans but less than 8 perhaps.

100  Mbps – Php 2999 – Oh you’ll certainly be prioritized for sure. That’s relatively big bucks talking.

Price Reference for 2020: https://pldthome.com/fibr

This should cover everything you need to apply for an internet connection.

Stay Informed and Stay Safe

Well it’s been a fun update since 2018. I just hope this updated guides help out more than it did previously.

Really, thank you my dear readers for the comments. That helped me realize how vital these pieces of information are during the Pandemic.

Please don’t hesitate to leave a like or comment and I’ll give you a reply whenever I can. Stay safe out there folks and seeeeya!

    1. So long as there’s a box, this might apply too. They’re using the same tech anyway. But the problem is I haven’t taken a peek at their box, afaik, they’re doing it underground in some cases.

    1. At the time na sinulat ko yan, yan lang available samin, and still is. Though yung newer na kabit mas malinis, and yes silver and gray ones.

Depende din kasi sa nag-kakabit if malinis or not. But yan yung usual sight.

  1. My only local box was full with ‘promo’ new applicants and PLDT just kept saying “not available in your area,” so I paid extra to FiberHome to bring a long line from a NAP further way (significantly apparently). Bit costly but a one-off and I now have 50Mbps optical connection, instead of about 12.5 for the ADSL at the same cost! I just asked my repair man to look for an empty slot first and he started off the negotiations with the installers who also got my application vaildated.

    1. And that’s how you do it. That’s great news!
And yes installers agree to connect yours to a NAP that’s farther away so long as you pay for a higher plan. That’s what I’ve seen during my days as an intern.

  2. I applied for PLDT fibr pero full na rin daw sabi ng technician. Can I pay the technician to connect me kahit malayo yung NAP sa bahay namin because that’s my only choice right now?

    1. You can re-apply for a higher tier connection para maikabit sa mas malayong NAP na may available slot.

I’ve seen people try to negotiate it and the technicians will tell you the same thing. Inconvenient but that’s the only way you’ll make em do it.

Why? Because they need to receive a service order (SO) first before they can get back to you. If you’re lucky na very considerate makakausap mo, they may do you a favor and i-prioritize ka kabitan if you re-apply for a higher plan.

    2. Hi what do you mean by go ask your neighbors if they still use that line , so you could get a connection? Can you clarify me please because I’m kinda discombobulating 😅 does it mean that if my neighbor already have a fibr home connection, I can get a firbr connection even if there are no available slots in my area??? Thanks

      1. Sometimes your neighbor might still have the line connected even if they’re already unsubscribed. You can’t tell by looking at the box so you have to ask around if they’re still subscribed on their fibr plan. That’s the best course of action if there’s no available slot. Trace the line, ask around.

It’s a bit hard to ask when you have a grumpy neighbor though, so be nice about it. We actually had installations back when I was an intern wherein we asked around if they’re still using the line to accommodate a new subscriber.

  3. 4 months ago, we started to apply for fiber cable lines from PLDT, through 1 agent (saleswomen) na pinakilala sa amin. Hanggang ngayun sinasabi nila wulang pang available na slot upon survey po ng techinician daw lahat puno either malayo yung nap box or malapit all its full. But some neighboor kahit nauna pa kaming nakapag pa line up naunahan pa rin kami, I cant believe na pati sa ganitong pamamaraan meron at meron paring politikang nagaganap and it sad for us who dont have much powers. Any way I can’t do anything about it, I just want to know if there is any other way na makapag request ng new NAP BOX to be install instead? and how? how PLDT can directly reach out regarding this issue na makapagrequest na lang po sa lugar namin ng bagong NAP BOX so we can be connected also, especially now kasi matagal nang wulang connection ng internet sa bahay namin since the day we applied for pldt connections, already months of failed connection with family abroad. Please advised Thank you in advanced.

    1. Same problem as my aunt really, sorry to hear that. Last I know nung OJT days ko, you can request basta maraming demand. It’s like a collective process.

They’re a bunch of snobs sa business office. Well, depends sa branch I suppose. It’s about the worth of money they’ll get for installing a NAP box.

Right now alam ko ProTek handles all the connections and the in-house guys handle the repairs.
Best of luck with this information. That’s all I can help you with.

You can try Converge. Personally Air Internet gamit ko. But that’s DSL, lucky lang malapit sa exchange. Try mo FiberX nila. It’s good value for speed too. Mabilis din gumalaw Converge.

I can suggest what I think is better, after all, my page isn’t called the Broadband Scanner for nothing. Hope this helps!

    1. Hmm. Either try nyo FiberX from Converge or an application from Globe. If PLDT lang po choice nyo, you really have to wait na may mag-pa disconnect

I do recommend Converge din. Using Air Internet at home kahit DSL and it works great. 10 mbps for Php 1250

Well, depends din sa location yung bilis for dsl of course

    1. Hi Jael,

I’m not entirely sure since it’s been ages since I’ve moved on from PLDT as an intern.
There could be, or not. Last I heard of huli na sa rollout Plaridel.

    1. Oh noes. Very unlikely po makabitan kayo on that distance. I don’t speak for PLDT but yung 2nd option po ninyo mas likely na pansinin.
Try nyo rin po Converge FiberX as another option or Air Internet.

  7. Question: What about if theres no box near our home. I see one but its like 6 houses away. It looks far. Is this okay?

If not, i have to go Converge which have these boxes on every post although the application is bit hassle

1,899? 2,899?

    1. I had the same treatment nung nag-apply ako for PLDT tbh – di na ko binalikan. Sad. Just so they know who they’re talking to, let them know kung ano LP or NP, then give them an estimate kung ano bilang mo sa slots via the wire method (if meron dangling wires). Very sorry sa late reply, I’ve been caught up in life.’

Sa ibang Bario? That’s unlikely they’ll do it. I’d rather go for Converge in this case or Globe.
Pretty good yung FiberX from Converge they said. I’ll make a review based on an interview soon.

  9. Need your advice. Thanks!

  10. Hello. Thanks for sharing this. Just want to ask if how would i know if my connection is in #1 slot, #2 slot.. up to #8 slot. I know #1 slot would matter because of the data connection. I was able to secure 1st slot before since i was the first to be installed fiber in our place.

    Like

    1. Unfortunately, they don’t tell anyone that. Though I know the first slot is always on the top of the connection stack.

Actually I don’t think the slot placement matters all that much. How fast your internet speed depends on your bandwidth/plan.

  11. Hi, your blog posts and your replies to your readers’ questions are really helpful! I just want to confirm, if an account already has a service order for relocation, shouldn’t there be a specified date of when will the technician is supposed to visit and survey the area? Cause I was told to wait 5 days after the order was made before I could follow up again to see the progress or status nung order sabi nung phone rep na nakausap ko but the in-store rep na nagcreate ng order advised me to follow up even a day after na macreate yung order. I am just confused about it kasi I worked as a rep before pero US Telco account, and I normally see that when there’s a service order for tech visit, may date na specified sa log. And gaano pala katagal after macreate yung SO at yung installation sa new address, esp. if based dun sa malapit na NAP sa bahay na paglilipatan ng service eh parang 4 tops palang yung nakakabit and it’s just 4-5 blocks away lang sa mismong bahay. I’d appreciate your reply! Thanks!

    1. Hi Maui, thanks for the comment. Knowing that I can help is pretty encouraging for me to continue making content.

As for your question, tbh I think that there really should be a specified date that they should visit and survey the area. The way I know things are more on the technical side rather than the business end of things really.

Based on my experience as an OJT before, all I know is they’re given SO’s for the day but what I don’t know is how the scheduling works from the business department. The way I see it, parang may area na prioritized in some days and yung extras nalang yung inaasikaso by the end of the day. Guess it depends on the management too sa area. I’m only speaking of the people in our area.

Though after my stint as an OJT di nga rin nagbother i-check yung NAP namin for a possibility to get connected, that’s literally a house away from my location. Ala, deadma.

But yes, strictly speaking I agree there should be a definite schedule just like how Converge set my connection up. They told me it would be on a Tuesday the week after, and they showed up precisely on the date they provided. In this case, go ate, feel free mang-away if ayaw nila mamansin. Other than that, look elsewhere. You deserve better service.

      1. Thanks for responding! A lot has happened actually lol. So I’ve talked to their customer rep to almost all medium and platforms possible i.e. email, FB, 171 hotline and twitter but none of them were able to provide me any specific date or atleast timeframe kung kelan makakabitan sa bagong location. I mean granted na nung Feb 17 lang nagawa yung service order, pero still I should be given a timeframe sa schedule kelan ako makakabitan. That was the issue talaga. Wala akong alam if kelan. I dont have time to stress out every other day to call or reach out to them for follow ups. So kahit medyo ayaw ko sa globe, I gave it a chance. In just 2-3 days nakabitan na ako. Atleast 1 less headache. I’ll just wait out til my contract is up with PLDT in March then I’m out.
